Flakiness Sieve Set

Flakiness Sieve Set

Product Code : EL-ATLE-10477

Flakiness Sieve Set (code EL-ATLE-10477) is a set of 7 slotted sieves used to pick out flaky aggregate particles, those thinner than 0.6 of their mean sieve size. The sample is split into seven sieve fractions from 6.3 to 63 mm and each is examined on its own sieve; the sieves are heavy gauge steel sheet with an electrostatic paint coating and a slot size accuracy better than 0.1 mm.

What Is the Flakiness Sieve Set Used For?

Thin, plate-like particles lower the strength and workability of concrete and can break during compaction of a road layer, so their proportion is measured as the flakiness index. Square-aperture test sieves are used first to grade the sample into the seven fractions; the operator then shakes each fraction over the slotted sieve made for it, and whatever falls through the slots is counted as flaky. The total mass of that material, expressed as a percentage of the mass tested, is the flakiness index of the aggregate. The standard listed for the set is BS 812-105.1.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of sieve sets required.
  • Preparation sieves — any of the 6.3, 10, 14, 20, 28, 37.5, 50 and 63 mm aperture test sieves needed for sample preparation, which are ordered separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many sieves are in the Flakiness Sieve Set?
The set has 7 slotted sieves, one for each of the seven aggregate fractions between 6.3 and 63 mm that are examined in the flakiness test.

What makes a particle flaky?
A particle is regarded as flaky when its thickness is less than 0.6 of its mean sieve size, the mean of the two sieve sizes that bound its fraction.

How are the sieves made?
They are manufactured from heavy gauge steel sheet, coated with electrostatic paint, and the slot sizes are held to an accuracy better than 0.1 mm.

Are the square-hole test sieves for sample preparation included?
No. The 6.3, 10, 14, 20, 28, 37.5, 50 and 63 mm aperture test sieves used to prepare the fractions are ordered separately from the set.

Which standard does the set relate to?
The standard listed for the Flakiness Sieve Set is BS 812-105.1, and the flakiness index it gives is reported as a percentage by mass.
