What Are the Brass Frame Sieves Used For?
Sieve analysis passes a dry sample through a nest of sieves whose apertures get smaller from top to bottom, and the mass retained on each sieve gives the particle size distribution used to grade and classify aggregates and soils. Sieves of one diameter are stacked in order of aperture, the sample is put on the top sieve and the nest is shaken by hand or in a sieve shaker; for a 200 mm stack the brass lid and receiver close the top and bottom. The designation table lets an IS 460 size be matched with its BS 410 and ASTM E 11 equivalents.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — how many sieves are needed of each size.
- Diameter — 200, 250, 300, 315 or 450 mm.
- Aperture sizes — the IS 460, BS 410 or ASTM E 11 sizes needed, from 4.75 mm down to 25 micron.
- Lid and receiver — whether the brass lid and receiver for 200 mm (8 in) sieves are wanted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which sieve diameters are available?
The sieves are made in 200, 250, 300, 315 and 450 mm diameters, and sieves sharing a nominal diameter fit inside one another to form a stack.
How much aggregate can be sieved at one time?
A stack of 200 mm (8 in) sieves handles as much as 1000 g of aggregates, while 300 mm (12 in) sieves take as much as 3000 g.
What are the frames, mesh and plates made of?
Frames and wire cloth are stainless steel, except the 450 mm frame, which is sheet steel. Perforated plates are tinned steel, and the lid and receiver for 200 mm sieves are brass.
When is a perforated plate used instead of wire cloth?
Perforated plate square hole test sieves are used for apertures of 4 mm and above, and woven wire test sieves for apertures below 4 mm.
How can an IS 460 size be matched to BS 410 or ASTM E 11?
The specification table lists each IS 460 size with its BS 410 and ASTM E 11 designations and aperture in micron; the 4.75 mm sieve, for example, sits against 4 in the ASTM E 11 column.
How is each sieve identified?
Each sieve carries a label marked with its specifications, its serial number and other details that identify the individual sieve.
