Proctor Needles Spring Type
Product Code : EL-STLE-10938
Proctor Needles Spring Type (code EL-STLE-10938) are soil penetrometers, also known as Proctor penetrometers, used for a quick field evaluation of soil density by comparison with standard compaction curves drawn in the laboratory. Each needle fits a spring-loaded plunger whose stem reads 0 to 40 kg in 1 kg divisions, the penetration stems are marked every 12.5 mm, and needle points from 0.25 to 6.0 sq. cm are available with a tommy.

What Are the Proctor Needles Spring Type Used For?
The force needed to push a needle into compacted fine-grained soil changes with the moisture content and density of the soil, so needle readings taken on the specimens used for the laboratory compaction curves give a reference for site work. On site the operator fits a needle point to suit the soil, pushes the needle steadily into the compacted layer to a depth marked on the stem and reads the force on the 0 to 40 kg scale. Comparing this reading with the laboratory values gives a quick estimate of the density reached. The standard listed for the needles is BS 1377:4.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of Proctor needle sets required.
- Needle points — which of the 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 3.5 and 6.0 sq. cm needle points are needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are Proctor needles used for?
They give a quick evaluation in the field of the density reached by compacted soil, by comparison with standard compaction curves of moisture content against density drawn in the laboratory.
What load range does the plunger read?
Its scale, marked on the stem of the spring-loaded plunger, runs from 0 to 40 kg in steps of 1 kg.
How is depth of penetration measured?
The longer stem, used with larger-area needles, is marked every 12.5 mm, and the small penetration stem for smaller-area needles is graded in 12.5 mm divisions.
Which needle point sizes are available?
Needle points of 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 3.5 and 6.0 sq. cm are available, one of each, together with one tommy.
Why are different needle areas offered?
Harder soils need a smaller needle point to keep the penetration force within the 0 to 40 kg scale, while softer soils need a larger area to give a readable force.
Which standard is listed for the needles?
The standard listed for the needles is BS 1377:4, the part of the British soil testing standard that deals with compaction-related tests.
