J Ring Apparatus

J Ring Apparatus

Product Code : EL-CTLE-10297

J Ring Apparatus (code EL-CTLE-10297) is a set for the J-Ring test, which measures how self compacting concrete passes through a ring of bars, giving its passing ability, flow spread and flow time, in laboratory mix trials or as a site quality control check. It comprises a stainless steel narrow gap J-Ring with 16 smooth bars of 18 mm diameter, a 900 × 900 × 3 mm stainless steel base plate engraved with 200 mm and 500 mm circles, a corrosion-protected sheet steel slump cone and a steel weighted collar.

What Is the J Ring Apparatus Used For?

Self compacting concrete has to flow through closely spaced reinforcement without its coarse aggregate jamming between the bars. For the test the slump cone, held steady by the weighted collar, is filled at the centre of the base plate inside the J-Ring and then lifted; the concrete spreads out through the ring of bars, and its spread diameter and flow time are recorded. A slump flow test is usually run alongside on the same plate without the ring, and the difference between the two spreads shows the passing ability of the mix. The engraved circles locate the cone and ring. The standards listed are ASTM C1621, ASTM C1621M and ASTM C1611.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of J-Ring sets required.
  • Ring rods — smooth rods or rebar rods on the J-Ring.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the J-Ring test measure?
It shows how well self compacting concrete gets between the bars of the ring, recording its flow spread and flow time as well as its passing ability.

What kind of bars does the J-Ring have?
J-Ring sets are offered with smooth or rebar rods; the narrow gap ring described here has 16 smooth stainless steel bars of 18 mm diameter.

What size is the J-Ring base plate?
The stainless steel base plate is 900 × 900 × 3 mm square and is engraved with positioning circles of 200 mm and 500 mm diameter.

Why is a slump flow test run together with the J-Ring test?
The slump flow test is the same procedure without the J-Ring, and comparing the two results gives an indicator of the passing ability of the concrete.

What is the weighted collar for?
The steel weighted collar sits on the slump cone to stabilize it while it is filled, in either the J-Ring test or the slump flow test.

Which standards are listed for the J-Ring set?
The standards listed are ASTM C1621, ASTM C1621M and ASTM C1611; the standard listed for the engraved base plate circles is EN 12350-8.
