Volume Change Apparatus
Product Code : EL-CTLE-10302
Volume Change Apparatus (code EL-CTLE-10302) is a set for measuring volume change of test specimens through the change in their length. The set holds a mould with an effective gauge length, its base plate and four reference pins, plus a comparator frame for the length readings, a stainless reference bar handled through an insulated grip and a dial gauge of 0.002 mm × 5 mm.

What Is the Volume Change Apparatus Used For?
Cement mortar and concrete shrink as they dry and can swell when wet or when expansive reactions take place, and such volume changes are followed by measuring the length of a bar between pins cast into its ends. The specimen is cast in the mould with the reference pins in place, and after demoulding it is set in the comparator frame and the dial gauge is read. Before each set of readings the stainless reference bar, handled by its insulated grip, is placed in the frame to check the zero, and later readings show the change in length with time. The standards listed are ASTM C 490, IS 4031 and BS 1881.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is included in the volume change apparatus?
There is one mould of effective gauge length with its base plate and four reference pins, and one each of the comparator frame, the stainless reference bar with insulated grip and the dial gauge.
What does the 0.002 mm × 5 mm dial gauge read?
The dial gauge reads length change in steps of 0.002 mm over a travel of 5 mm, which is how the movement of the specimen is followed.
Why does the reference bar have an insulated grip?
Warmth from the hand would expand a bare metal bar slightly, so the insulated grip lets the stainless reference bar be placed in the comparator without upsetting the check reading.
Which standards are listed for volume change measurement?
The standards listed are ASTM C 490, IS 4031 and BS 1881 for this mould, comparator and dial gauge set.
