Liquid Limit Devices (Casagrande)

Liquid Limit Devices (Casagrande)

Product Code : EL-STLE-10383

Liquid Limit Devices (Casagrande) (code EL-STLE-10383) are mechanical cup devices used to determine the liquid limit of soil by the Casagrande method. A brass cup on an adjustable bracket is set for a 1 cm fall and raised and dropped onto a rubber base of standard hardness by cam action, a counter registers the blows, and each device comes with two grooving tools and a height gauge block.

What Are the Liquid Limit Devices (Casagrande) Used For?

The liquid limit marks the water content at which a soil changes from a plastic to a liquid state, and together with the plastic limit it gives the plasticity index used to classify fine grained soils and to estimate properties such as compressibility. The operator sets the 1 cm fall with the height gauge block, spreads moist soil in the brass cup, cuts a groove with a grooving tool and turns the cam so the cup drops repeatedly onto the rubber base while the counter records the blows. The blows needed to close the groove over 1.25 cm are noted at several moisture contents, and the water content at 25 blows is the liquid limit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the liquid limit defined for this test?
It is the water content at which soil cut by a groove of standard dimensions flows together over a distance of 1.25 cm when the cup is given 25 blows.

What is the cup made of and how far does it drop?
The cup is brass and sits on an adjustable bracket; its drop is set to 1 cm, so that it falls onto a rubber base of standard hardness.

What accessories come with the device?
Each device is supplied complete with two grooving tools, one of them the Casagrande type, and a height gauge block for checking the 1 cm fall.

How are the blows counted?
The cup is raised and dropped by cam action, and a counter on the device registers the number of blows during each determination.

Why are liquid limit results useful?
Liquid limit values help relate a soil to its mechanical behaviour, compressibility in particular, and together with the plastic limit they are used to classify fine grained soils.

Which standards does the device list?
For liquid limit testing with this device, the standards listed are IS 2720 (Part V), BS 1377-2 and ASTM D 4318.
