Liquid Limit Penetrometers

Liquid Limit Penetrometers

Product Code : EL-STLE-10382

Liquid Limit Penetrometers (code EL-STLE-10382) are cone penetrometers used to find the moisture content at which clay soils pass from the plastic to the liquid state, and also to determine undrained shear strength. Each stands on a cast iron base with levelling screws, carries a digital penetration gauge reading to 0.01 mm with automatic zeroing and an electronic release, and weighs approximately 8.5 kg; the semi-automatic model adds a magnetic automatic plunger release and an adjustable electronic fall timer.

What Are the Liquid Limit Penetrometers Used For?

In the cone penetration method a cone of set angle and mass is released onto the surface of a soil paste held in a cup, and the depth it sinks in a fixed time is measured. The test is repeated at several moisture contents, and the liquid limit is read from the plot of penetration against moisture content. The operator brings the cone tip just onto the soil with the rack and pinion and micrometer adjustment, zeroes the digital gauge and presses the release, then reads the penetration and resets the head with the clutch. On the semi-automatic model the magnetic release and electronic timer control the fall time.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of liquid limit penetrometers required.
  • Model — whether the semi-automatic model with magnetic plunger release and electronic fall timer is required.
  • Cones and gauges — the penetration cones (30°, 30° 100 g, 30° 400 g or 60° 60 g) and cone test gauges needed, as cones are ordered separately.
  • Sample cups — the number of 55 mm × 40 mm or 75 mm × 50 mm cups required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can the penetrometer determine besides the liquid limit?
Besides the moisture content at which clay soil passes from the plastic to the liquid state, the cone penetrometer is also used to determine the undrained shear strength of the soil.

How is penetration measured?
A digital penetration measurement gauge reading to 0.01 mm shows the cone penetration, with a release button and automatic zeroing; a clutch mechanism allows reading and resetting between tests.

What does the semi-automatic model add?
It has an automatic controller that releases the plunger through a magnetic device, micrometer vertical adjustment and an adjustable electronic timer for setting and reading the fall time of the needle.

Are cones and sample cups included?
No, penetration cones and sample cups are ordered separately. The accessories offered are 30° cones, including 100 g and 400 g versions, a 60° 60 g cone, cone test gauges and 55 mm and 75 mm sample cups.

How heavy is the penetrometer and how is it levelled?
The penetrometer weighs approximately 8.5 kg and stands on a cast iron base with levelling screws and a spirit level for setting it up level.

Which standards are listed for these penetrometers?
The standards listed are BS 1377:2, UNE 7002, UNE 7377, UNI 10014, DIN 18122 and NF P94-052-1.
