Hydraulic Ram Test Bed

Hydraulic Ram Test Bed

Product Code : EL-FMLE-10664

Hydraulic Ram Test Bed (code EL-FMLE-10664) is an apparatus for studying the hydraulic ram pump, which uses the water hammer effect in a drive pipe to lift part of a low-velocity supply flow to a greater height with no energy source other than the flowing water. A clear acrylic pump body with stainless steel pulse and non-return valves, an air vessel and an adjustable acrylic header tank work from a Hydraulics Bench, with a variable supply head of 300-700 mm and delivery head of 750-1500 mm.

What Is the Hydraulic Ram Test Bed Used For?

When water flowing in a long pipe is stopped suddenly, the pressure rises sharply and a pressure wave runs back along the pipe; the hydraulic ram uses this surge to push a small part of the flow up to a delivery head well above the supply head. Students set the header tank and outlet hose heights, let the pulse valve start cycling and measure the drive flow and the delivered flow with the Hydraulics Bench. Adding weights to the pulse valve changes its closing pressure, so repeating the runs at several supply and delivery heads shows how the output of the ram and its efficiency vary, while the air vessel evens out the pulsing delivery.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of test beds required.
  • Educational software — whether the optional software package is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a hydraulic ram pump water without a motor?
A low-velocity column of water in the drive pipe acts like a plunger. When the pulse valve closes, the sudden stop creates water hammer, which forces part of the water through the non-return valve to a higher head.

What heads can be set?
The supply head is variable from 300 to 700 mm and the delivery head from 750 to 1500 mm, using the adjustable header tank and the outlet hose with its variable head arrangement.

What is the air vessel for?
Mounted above the valve chamber, the air vessel smooths the cyclic fluctuations in the delivery from the ram and reduces hydraulic shock in the system.

How are the operating characteristics changed?
Weights supplied with the unit are added to the pulse valve to change its closing pressure, which alters how the ram cycles and how much it delivers.

Which materials are used for the pump and valves?
The pump body is made from clear acrylic, so the valve action can be watched, and the pulse and non-return valves are made of stainless steel.

Where does the ram get its water from?
The header tank is fed by a Hydraulics Bench through a quick-release fitting, and the bench is also used to measure the water passing through during the tests.
