What Is the Angle Plate Used For?
An angle plate gives a reference face at right angles to the surface plate or machine table, so that a part clamped to its upright face is held square while lines are scribed on it or while it is drilled or milled. The user bolts the plate to the table through its T bolt slots, clamps the work piece against the vertical face and marks out or machines it with the right-angle relationship already set. The two faces are square within 0.002 inch per 6 inch, and the standard listed for it is BS 5535 Grade B.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of angle plates required.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size is the Angle Plate?
It measures 6 inch × 5 inch × 4-1/2 inch and is of welded construction in high tensile, close-grained cast iron.
How square are the faces?
The two faces are square within 0.002 inch per 6 inch, so work clamped to them is held at right angles to the table.
Why is the cast iron stress relieved?
The material is stabilised and stress relieved so that it does not move or distort further after machining, which keeps the faces square over time.
How is work fastened to the plate?
Slotted holes or T bolt slots machined into the surfaces let work pieces be clamped to the plate and the plate be bolted to a fixture base, machine bed or worktable.
Which standard is listed for it?
The standard listed for it is BS 5535 Grade B, which is given alongside the plate's cast iron construction.
Is there a version for inclined work?
Yes. Adjustable angle plates are also available, for work that has to be tilted at an angle, usually towards a milling cutter.
