What Is the Combination Square Used For?

Combination squares are used for layout and checking at the bench. With the square head against the edge of the work, the blade gives a 90° line or checks that a face is square, and the 45° face sets out mitre joints. To find the centre of a round bar or dowel, the legs of the centre square are placed against the bar and a line is scribed along the rule; a second line drawn at another position crosses the first near the centre. The sliding head also acts as a depth gauge or transfers a dimension, and the protractor head sets other angles.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of combination squares required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What angles can the combination square check?
The square head lays out or checks 90° and 45° angles, the 45° angle being used commonly for mitre joints, and the protractor head sets other angles.

How is the blade graduated?
The blade is 12 in (305 mm) long and is graduated in 1/32, 1/16 and 1/8 in increments along its length.

How does it find the centre of a round bar?
The rule is passed through the centre square and its two cast iron legs are placed against the bar; lines scribed at two positions intersect near the centre.

Can it be used as a depth gauge?
Yes. Moving and setting the head along the blade lets it act as a depth gauge or transfer dimensions from one part to another.

Is there a level or scriber?
A rudimentary level is built into the protractor head and the 45° holder, and a scribe point is stored in a drilled hole in the square base for marking.
