What Is the Lathe Tool Dynamometer Used For?

In turning, the tool is pushed back by three force components: the main cutting or tangential force, the feed force along the axis and the radial force. With the dynamometer clamped on the tool post and the tool fitted, students take cuts at different speeds, feeds and depths of cut on different materials and read the X, Y and Z forces together on the three displays. Comparing the readings shows how each parameter changes the cutting load, so the optimum feed, speed and depth of cut can be studied, and the analog output can feed a recorder or data logger for continuous traces.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of dynamometers required.
  • Capacity — up to 500 Kgf in each direction as listed, or the other capacity required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which forces does the Lathe Tool Dynamometer measure?
It measures the cutting forces in the X, Y and Z directions simultaneously, each shown on its own 3 digit LED display.

What capacity and resolution does it have?
The capacity is up to 500 Kgf in each of the X, Y and Z directions, with a resolution of 1 kg for all three components; other capacities are available.

How is it fitted to the lathe?
It mounts on any conventional lathe; a 25 mm dia. hole mounts the sensor on the tool post, and it takes a 20 mm square tool.

Can the readings be recorded?
Yes. An analog output connects any recorder or data logger, and the sensor links to the indicator through a 9 pin D connector with a 3 metre shielded cable.

What is the instrument used to study?
It is used to study and analyse the optimum feed, speed and depth of cut on different materials by measuring how the cutting forces change.

What power supply and accessories are included?
The unit runs on a 230V 50 Hz supply and is supplied with one 20 mm HSS tool bit as its accessory.
