What Is the Density Basket Used For?
To find the specific gravity and water absorption of coarse aggregate, the sample has to be weighed while it is fully submerged. The basket holding the soaked aggregate is hung by its bail handle from a balance into a tank of water and its mass in water is recorded; the same aggregate is then weighed surface-dry and oven-dry, and the three masses give the specific gravity and absorption. The mesh lets water pass freely while holding the particles. The standards listed are ASTM C127, AASHTO T85, IS 2386 (Part-III) and BS 812.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Density Basket used for?
It holds coarse aggregate while the sample is weighed submerged in water, a step in finding the specific gravity and water absorption of the aggregate.
What is the basket made of?
The basket is made of brass/GI, with a stainless steel wire mesh of 6.3 mm/4.75 mm size, and has a bail-type handle for hanging it.
How big is the basket?
It is approximately 20 cm in diameter and 20 cm high, given in the specifications as 8 in diam. × 8 in h. (203 × 203 mm).
How much does it weigh?
The basket has a net weight of 2 lbs, or 0.91 kg, and it is complete with a bail-type handle.
Why is the aggregate weighed in water?
The difference between its mass in air and its mass in water gives the volume of the particles, from which the specific gravity of the aggregate is calculated.
Which standards apply to the basket?
The standards listed are ASTM C127 and AASHTO T85, together with IS 2386 (Part-III) and BS 812 for density and absorption testing of aggregates.
