Magnesium Sulphate / Sodium Sulphate Test Water Bath
Product Code : EL-ATLE-10490
Magnesium Sulphate / Sodium Sulphate Test Water Bath (code EL-ATLE-10490) is a temperature-controlled bath for magnesium sulphate and sodium sulphate soundness tests, which show how aggregates resist weathering action such as freezing and thawing cycles. It has a stainless steel dipping chamber whose solution temperature is set automatically by a heating and cooling system, a microprocessor temperature controller and a water circulation pump, and it serves as a general purpose water bath when the dipping cabinet is removed.

What Is the Magnesium Sulphate / Sodium Sulphate Test Water Bath Used For?
In a sulphate soundness test, graded aggregate is soaked in a sulphate solution and then dried, over a number of cycles; salt crystals growing in the pores split weak particles, imitating the effect of weathering. The bath keeps the solution in the dipping chamber at the required temperature while the samples are immersed, with the circulation pump keeping the temperature even, and the hydrometer is used to check the density of a sodium sulphate solution. Ovens for drying, sieves and balances complete the set-up, and the mass lost after the final cycle shows the soundness. The standards listed are EN 1367-2, EN 13450, ASTM C88, UNI 8520-10 and UNE 7136.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of soundness test baths required.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a sulphate soundness test show?
It shows how well an aggregate resists breakdown under weathering action such as freezing and thawing, by measuring the loss after repeated soaking in sulphate solution and drying.
Can sodium sulphate be used instead of magnesium sulphate?
Yes. Sodium sulphate can be used in place of magnesium sulphate according to the ASTM standard, and a hydrometer of 1100-1200 g/ml is then required for the test.
How is the solution temperature controlled?
A microprocessor type controller and a heating and cooling system adjust the solution in the stainless steel dipping chamber automatically, and a circulation pump gives a homogeneous temperature.
Can the bath be used for other work?
With the dipping cabinet removed, it can be used as a general purpose water bath.
What other equipment is needed for the test?
The soundness tests also need other equipment, such as ovens, sieves and balances, in addition to the bath, and a hydrometer for the sodium sulphate test.
Which standards are listed for the bath?
The standards listed are EN 1367-2, EN 13450, ASTM C88, UNI 8520-10 and UNE 7136, covering European, American, Italian and Spanish practice.
