What Is the Shape Index Caliper Used For?
Shape index compares the length of each aggregate particle with its thickness, because long, thin particles behave differently from compact, cubical ones in concrete and asphalt. Using the caliper, the operator measures the greatest length and the smallest thickness of each particle in the test portion and sorts out those that are disproportionately long for their thickness; their mass as a share of the portion gives the shape index. The 200 mm range takes large particles, and the 0.05 mm graduation allows close readings. The standards listed are EN 933-4, DIN 4226, CNR NO.95 and NLT 354.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Shape Index Caliper measure?
It is used to determine the shape factor of aggregates, by measuring the length and thickness of individual particles so that non-cubical ones can be identified.
What is its measuring range and graduation?
The caliper measures up to 200 mm, and its scale is graduated in increments of 0.05 mm.
What are its overall size and weight?
Its overall dimensions are 450 × 150 × 50 mm and its approximate weight is 0.4 kg.
Under which standards is the caliper used?
The standards listed for the caliper are EN 933-4, DIN 4226, CNR NO.95 and NLT 354.
Why does particle shape matter?
Elongated or flat particles pack less closely and break more readily than compact ones, which affects the workability of concrete and the stability of asphalt layers.
