Ball Penetration Apparatus

Ball Penetration Apparatus

Product Code : EL-CTLE-10314

Ball Penetration Apparatus (code EL-CTLE-10314) is a Kelly ball test set for determining the workability of fresh Portland cement concrete, where doubling the Kelly ball reading gives roughly the slump. Its 15 kg cylinder, ball-shaped at the bottom and fitted with a handle, sinks into the concrete while a strip frame guides the handle and acts as the datum for penetration, and the handle, graduated in mm, allows readings to the nearest 0.5 mm.

What Is the Ball Penetration Apparatus Used For?

The Kelly ball test measures how far a heavy ball sinks into fresh concrete under its own weight, which reflects the consistency of the mix, and it can be made on concrete in the forms or in a container without filling a cone. The strip frame is set across the levelled concrete surface, the ball is lowered until it just touches the surface and is then released; the handle slides down through the frame and the depth of penetration is read on its mm scale. Doubling the reading gives an approximate slump value. The standard listed for it is ASTM C-360.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of ball penetration sets required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Kelly ball reading tell the user?
The depth to which the ball sinks indicates the workability of the concrete, and twice the Kelly ball reading is approximately equal to the slump of the same mix.

How heavy are the ball and handle?
The cylinder with its ball-shaped bottom and the handle weigh 15 kg together, and that weight drives the ball into the fresh concrete.

How is the depth of penetration measured?
A strip frame guides the handle and serves as the reference level, and the handle is graduated in mm so penetration can be recorded to the nearest 0.5 mm.

Which standard is listed for the ball penetration test?
The standard listed for it is ASTM C-360, for the ball penetration test on fresh Portland cement concrete.
