What Is the Beam Mould Used For?
Concrete beams are cast so that the flexural strength of a mix, also called its modulus of rupture, can be measured by loading the hardened beam in bending until it cracks. The 4 plates are assembled on the base plate, fresh concrete is placed and compacted, and the surface is levelled with the top edges of the mould. After setting, the plates are released and the beam is taken out for curing before it goes to a flexure testing frame. Flexural strength matters most where concrete works in bending, as in pavements. For the beam mould, the standards listed are BS and IS.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of beam moulds required.
- Material — cast iron or mild steel construction.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size of beam does the mould cast?
Each mould produces a concrete beam 100 mm × 100 mm in section and 500 mm long, and it is supplied complete with a base plate.
Is the beam mould made of cast iron or steel?
Beam moulds are offered in cast iron or in mild steel, so the material can be chosen when ordering. Both versions are built from 4 assembled plates.
How flat are the faces of the beam mould?
Each beam mould face is held flat to ±0.2 mm by machining, and its finished size is kept to 0.2 mm, which keeps the beam section uniform along its length.
What are concrete beam specimens tested for?
Hardened beams are loaded in bending to measure flexural strength, the stress at which the beam cracks, which matters for concrete such as pavement slabs that is loaded in bending.
Which standards are given for the beam mould?
The standards listed are BS and IS for this mould, which casts beams of 100 mm × 100 mm × 500 mm.
