What Is the Mortar Penetrometer Used For?

The setting time of concrete is found on its mortar fraction, obtained by sieving the coarse aggregate out of a fresh sample, because stones would obstruct the needle. The mortar is placed in a container and, at intervals, the operator pushes a needle into it to the 25 mm depth shown by the shank markings, reading the force from the sliding ring on the graduated stem. Dividing that force by the needle area gives the penetration resistance, and larger needles are exchanged for smaller ones as the mortar stiffens. Plotting resistance against time shows the rate of hardening and the times of setting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Mortar Penetrometer measure?
It measures the penetration resistance of mortar sieved from fresh concrete, from which the rate of hardening of the mortar component of the concrete is found.

What load range does the stem cover?
The spring and stem are graduated from 0 to 70 kg in 1 kg divisions, and a sliding ring on the stem indicates the force applied.

Which needle sizes are provided?
There are 6 interchangeable penetration needles, with areas including 645, 323, 65, 32 and 16 mm²; smaller needles are used as the mortar hardens.

How deep does the needle go for a reading?
Penetration resistance is the force exerted to push the needle 25 mm into the mortar, and the needle shanks are marked every 12.5 mm to show the depth.

How is the instrument stored and carried?
It is supplied complete in a wooden carrying case, which holds the penetrometer and its interchangeable needles for use in the laboratory or on site.
