Liquid Limit Device Motorized
Product Code : EL-STLE-10935
Liquid Limit Device Motorized (code EL-STLE-10935) is a motor-driven apparatus for the liquid limit test on soil, which finds the water content at which a groove of standard dimensions cut in the soil closes over 1.25 cm under 25 blows. A brass cup on an adjustable bracket is raised and dropped through a 1 cm fall onto a rubber base by cam action at approx. 120 RPM on 220 V, and one Casagrande and one ASTM grooving tool and a height gauge block are included.

What Is the Liquid Limit Device Motorized Used For?
The liquid limit marks the water content at which a soil passes from a plastic to a liquid state, and together with the plastic limit it gives the plasticity index used to classify fine-grained soils. The operator spreads moist soil in the brass cup, cuts a groove with the Casagrande or ASTM grooving tool and runs the motor so that the cam lifts and drops the cup onto the rubber base, counting blows until the groove closes over 1.25 cm. Repeating this at several water contents locates the value at 25 blows; the height gauge block sets the 1 cm fall beforehand. The standards listed for it are IS 2720 (Part V), BS 1377-2 and ASTM D 4318.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of motorised devices required.
- Grooving tools — any additional grooving tools, which are made in various sizes and shapes.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the device measure?
It is used to find the liquid limit of soil, taken as the water content at which a groove of standard dimensions closes over a distance of 1.25 cm under 25 blows.
How is the cup moved?
A cam lifts the brass cup, mounted on an adjustable bracket, and lets it fall onto a rubber base of standardised hardness, with a motor gear driving it at approx. 120 RPM.
How is the height of fall set?
The cup can be adjusted for a fall of 1 cm, and the height gauge block that comes with the device is used to check this setting.
Which grooving tools are supplied?
One Casagrande grooving tool and one ASTM grooving tool are included, along with the height gauge block. Grooving tools are also made in various sizes and shapes.
What power supply and weight does it have?
The motorised device works on 220 V and weighs 4 kg, and its cup bed is made of brass and fibre.
Which standards are listed for the device?
Three standards are listed for the device: IS 2720 (Part V), BS 1377-2 and ASTM D 4318, all of which include liquid limit testing of soils.
