What Is the Plastic Limit Set Used For?

The plastic limit is the water content at which a thread of soil just begins to crumble when rolled down to about 3 mm diameter, and with the liquid limit it gives the plasticity index used to classify clays and silts. Soil mixed with water in the porcelain basin is rolled by hand on the glass plate into a thread, and the 3 mm rod serves as a guide to the thread diameter at which crumbling is judged. The crumbled thread is placed in the moisture containers, weighed, oven dried and weighed again, and the average water content is reported as the plastic limit.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of plastic limit sets required.
  • Rod material — brass or stainless steel for the 3 mm dia. × 150 mm rod.
  • Glass plate — whether the larger 500 × 500 × 10 mm glass plate is wanted, at extra cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is supplied in the Plastic Limit Set?
One each of a set of 6 moisture containers, a glass plate, a brass or stainless steel rod, a flexible spatula, a porcelain basin and a plastic wash bottle.

What is the 3 mm rod for?
The 3 mm dia. × 150 mm rod is laid beside the soil thread as a comparison, so the operator can tell when the thread has been rolled down to 3 mm.

What size is the rolling plate?
The glass plate in the set measures 20 cm × 15 cm with round ends; a larger 500 × 500 × 10 mm glass plate can be supplied at extra cost.

Can the rod be supplied in stainless steel?
Yes. The rod is offered in brass or stainless steel, in both cases 3 mm in diameter and 150 mm long.

How is the plastic limit result used?
Together with the liquid limit, it gives the plasticity index of the soil, which is used to classify fine grained soils and to compare their plasticity.

Which standards does the set list?
For plastic limit testing with this set, the standards listed are IS 2720 (Part VII), ASTM D-42, BS 1377 and AASHTO T 90.
