What Is the Surface Soil Sampler Used For?
Because the sampling tube has a fixed internal volume, the density of the soil in place can be found by weighing the soil it holds. The tube is set upright on the prepared surface and the 5 kg hammer is lifted and dropped along its slide onto the driving head until the tube is driven in; it is then dug out, the soil is trimmed flush with both ends and weighed, and a moisture content determination gives the dry density.
