Proctor Penetrometer
Product Code : EL-STLE-10397
Proctor Penetrometer (code EL-STLE-10397) is a spring dynamometer type penetrometer used to establish the relationship between moisture content and penetration resistance of fine-grained soils. Its handle stem carries a 0 to 55 kg load scale in 1 kg subdivisions with a sliding ring that marks the maximum pressure reached, nine interchangeable needles from 28.55 mm to 4.52 mm diameter are provided, and the 3.5 kg instrument is supplied in a wooden carrying case.

What Is the Proctor Penetrometer Used For?
When soil is compacted at a range of moisture contents, its resistance to penetration by a needle changes, and a calibration curve of penetration resistance against moisture content, made in the laboratory alongside the compaction test, lets the moisture content of compacted soil be estimated in the field. The operator fits a needle of suitable size, pushes it steadily into the soil to a set depth and reads the force on the handle scale, where the sliding ring holds the maximum. The force divided by the end area of the needle gives the penetration resistance. The standard listed for it is ASTM D1558.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Proctor Penetrometer measure?
It measures the penetration resistance of fine-grained soil, which varies with moisture content, so that the moisture content-penetration resistance relationship of the soil can be established.
What load range does the scale cover?
The pressure-indicating scale on the handle stem reads from 0 to 55 kg in 1 kg subdivisions, with a maximum load indicator.
Which needle sizes are supplied?
Interchangeable needles of 28.55, 24.79, 20.22, 16.54, 12.83, 9.07, 6.40, 5.23 and 4.52 mm diameter are provided, so the needle can be matched to the stiffness of the soil.
How is the maximum reading kept?
A sliding ring on the handle stem stays at the maximum pressure obtained in the test, so the peak value can be read once the needle has been withdrawn.
How is it carried and what does it weigh?
The penetrometer weighs approximately 3.5 kg and travels in a wooden carrying case together with its interchangeable needles.
Which standard is quoted for the Proctor needle test?
The standard listed for it is ASTM D1558, covering the moisture-penetration resistance relationship of fine-grained soils.
