What Is the Behavior of Column and Struts Apparatus Used For?
A slender column under axial load does not simply crush; at a certain load it bows sideways and loses stability, and that critical buckling load depends on the strut's length, stiffness and the way its ends are held. Students clamp a strut in the chucks with the chosen end conditions, turn the screw to compress it and read the load on the Digital Force Display while the magnetic scale shows the sideways deflection, continuing until the critical buckling load is reached. Repeating the test with other strut lengths or fixings lets them compare measured loads with theory.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of strut apparatus required.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Behavior of Column and Struts Apparatus teach?
It lets students investigate the deflection and stability of struts, compressing aluminium columns until they reach the critical buckling load and comparing results for different lengths and fixings.
How many struts are included?
Five different sizes of aluminium strut are included, together with storage space for keeping them with the equipment.
How is the load applied and measured?
Students compress the strut with a screw mechanism, and an integral load cell connected to a Digital Force Display shows the load on the strut as it is compressed.
Can the end conditions be changed?
Yes. Chucks hold the struts and allow different end fixing conditions, so the effect of end fixing on buckling load can be studied alongside strut length.
How is buckling deflection measured?
A magnetic deflection scale shows how far the strut bows sideways as the load increases towards the critical buckling load.
What documentation comes with it?
A lecturer guide gives details of the equipment with sample experiment results, and a student guide explains how to use the equipment and sets out the experiment procedures.
