Unsymmetrical Bending Apparatus

Unsymmetrical Bending Apparatus

Product Code : EL-SELE-10581

Unsymmetrical Bending Apparatus (code EL-SELE-10581) is an apparatus for the experimental and analytical study of deflections in unsymmetrical bending of a cantilever beam. An 80 cm long angle of 1 in × 1 in × 1/8 in section, or its metric equivalent, is clamped as a cantilever that can be rotated and set with its principal axis at any angle, and a 25 mm travel dial gauge with magnetic base, a supporting stand and a set of weights are supplied.

What Is the Unsymmetrical Bending Apparatus Used For?

When a beam's principal axes are not aligned with the load, as with an angle section, a vertical load produces deflection both downwards and sideways, so the free end moves at an angle to the load. Students clamp the angle with its principal axis set at a chosen inclination, hang weights at the free end and measure the horizontal and vertical deflections with the dial gauge on its magnetic base. Repeating the test at other angles of rotation gives results that are compared with deflections calculated from the section's principal second moments of area.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Unsymmetrical Bending Apparatus demonstrate?
It is used for the experimental and analytical study of deflections when a cantilever beam bends unsymmetrically, with its principal axis inclined to the direction of load.

What beam section is used?
The beam is an angle of 1 in × 1 in × 1/8 in section, or its metric equivalent, 80 cm long and fixed at one end as a cantilever.

Can the orientation of the section be changed?
Yes. The beam can be rotated in set intervals and clamped so that the principal axis of its cross-section lies at any angle to the horizontal and vertical planes.

How are the deflections measured?
A vertical load is applied at the free end, and a dial gauge with 25 mm travel on a magnetic base measures the horizontal and vertical deflection there.

What is supplied with the apparatus?
The apparatus comes complete with a supporting stand, a set of weights and the 25 mm travel dial gauge with its magnetic base.

Why does an angle section bend sideways under a vertical load?
Its principal axes are inclined to the load direction, so the load has components about both axes and the beam deflects along both, not only in the plane of the load.
