Working Model of Clutch Type Differential
Product Code : EL-AELE-10741
Working Model of Clutch Type Differential (code EL-AELE-10741) is a sectioned teaching model that demonstrates how a clutch-type limited slip differential (LSD) works and where it is applied. Such a differential has the components of an open differential plus a spring pack and a set of clutches; the model is of light metal construction with parts cross-sectioned to show internal operation, sits on a base, is operated by a crank handle and is approx. 450 × 400 × 300 mm overall.

What Is the Working Model of Clutch Type Differential Used For?
An open differential always sends equal torque to both wheels, so if one wheel spins on a slippery patch the other receives too little to move the vehicle. A clutch-type limited slip differential adds a spring pack that loads a set of clutches between the side gears and the differential case, letting more torque pass to the wheel with grip while still allowing the speed difference needed on corners. Turning the crank handle, the instructor shows the side gears and pinions working as in an open unit, then points out the clutch plates and spring pack in the cross-section; some designs use a cone clutch, much like a manual gearbox synchroniser.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of limited slip differential models required.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does a clutch-type differential differ from an open differential?
It has all the components of an open differential but adds a spring pack and a set of clutches, which resist a difference in speed between the wheels and pass torque to the wheel with grip.
Do all clutch-type differentials use plate clutches?
No. Some designs use a cone clutch instead, working in a similar way to the synchronisers in a manual transmission.
How is the model operated?
It is operated manually by a crank handle, with various parts cross-sectioned so the gears, clutches and spring pack can be seen working.
What is it made of?
The model is of light metal construction, with parts painted in different colours to separate them and many parts chromium plated and galvanised.
How large is it?
Mounted on a base, the model is roughly 450 mm long, 400 mm wide and 300 mm high, and its weight is approximately 12 kg.
