Parallel and Counter Flow Heat Exchanger with Data Acquisition

Parallel and Counter Flow Heat Exchanger with Data Acquisition

Product Code : EL-HAMTLE-10765

Parallel and Counter Flow Heat Exchanger with Data Acquisition (code EL-HAMTLE-10765) is a teaching apparatus in which hot and cold water exchange heat in a concentric tube exchanger, with the streams running either the same way or in opposite directions. The exchanger has 2 sections of insulated concentric stainless steel tubes and is fed by a service module with hot water tank and pump, a 3000 W heater, 6 temperature points, hot and cold water flow meters and a temperature control unit.

What Is the Parallel and Counter Flow Heat Exchanger with Data Acquisition Used For?

In a concentric tube exchanger one stream runs through the inner tube and the other through the annular space around it, so heat passes through the inner tube wall; insulating the outer tubes keeps the heat lost to the room small. Students bring the tank water to temperature with the 3000 W heater and its control unit, set the hot and cold flows and note the readings at the 6 temperature points once they settle. Energy given up by the hot stream and taken by the cold stream gives the heat transfer coefficient. Switching the cold hose valves then reverses the cold water, so parallel and counter flow results can be set side by side.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — how many concentric tube exchanger units are needed.
  • Mains supply — one of 230 V 50 Hz, 230 V 60 Hz or 120 V 60 Hz, each single phase.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the exchanger built?
It is a concentric tube exchanger made of 2 sections of insulated concentric stainless steel tubes, with the hot and cold water flowing through separate passages.

How is counter flow selected?
The cold water direction is reversed by switching the cold hose valves, turning the parallel flow arrangement into counter flow on the same exchanger.

What is the difference between parallel and counter flow?
In parallel flow both streams enter at the same end and travel the same way; in counter flow they enter at opposite ends and travel in opposite directions.

What heats the water?
The service module has a hot water tank with a transfer pump and a 3000 W heater, governed by a temperature control unit; the heating power range is 0 to 3000 W.

Which quantities are measured?
Temperatures are taken at 6 points, and flow meters measure both the hot and the cold water, so the heat transfer coefficient and the effects of flow rate and temperature difference can be found.

What services and space are needed?
An outside water supply is required along with a single-phase supply of 230 V or 120 V. The apparatus measures approx. 1200 × 600 × 800 mm and weighs approx. 40 kg.
