What Is the Dial Bore Gauge Used For?

A dial bore gauge measures the diameter of a hole by comparison: the gauge is first set to a known size, then inserted into the bore and rocked gently across it, and the smallest reading on the dial shows how far the bore differs from the set size. The extra wide bridge centres the gauge in the bore automatically, so consistent readings need little skill. With its interchangeable anvils and extension rods, the three gauges in the set take bores from 10 mm up to 150 mm, which suits inspection of machined bores, cylinders and housings in workshops and teaching laboratories.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of bore gauge sets required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What bore range does the set cover?
The set covers small bores from 10 mm to 18 mm, a middle range of 18-50 mm, and a third gauge for bores of 50-150 mm.

Why is the 18-50 mm gauge useful?
It covers in one gauge a range that would generally need two bore gauges, of 18-35 mm and 35-60 mm dia., so fewer gauges have to be kept.

How does the gauge centre itself in the bore?
An extra wide bridge gives automatic centring, and the self-centralising feature means a measurement can be made with a minimum of skill.

What are the anvils made of?
The stationary and moving anvils are carbide-tipped for wear resistance, and interchangeable anvils in different sizes are supplied with the set.

What is supplied in the case?
The wooden case holds the measurement anvils, extension rods and the necessary tools, so the set is packed with the accessories for its complete range.

What should an export enquiry include?
Give the quantity of sets, the destination country and port or city, delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, any packing requirements and any tender reference.
