What Is the Drill Tool Dynamometer Used For?
When a hole is drilled, the drill pushes down on the work with an axial thrust and the work resists its rotation with a torque; both rise with feed and change with speed, drill size and material. The workpiece is clamped in the job holder on the sensing unit, the readings are balanced to zero with the potentiometer, and holes up to 20 mm diameter are drilled at chosen speeds and feeds while thrust and torque are read together on the indicator. The measured values can then be compared with empirical calculations of drilling forces, with or without cutting fluid.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of drill dynamometers required.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Drill Tool Dynamometer measure?
It measures thrust and torque during a drilling operation, along with the effect of speed and feed on these cutting forces, for drilling up to 20 mm diameter.
What are the thrust and torque ranges?
Thrust is read from 0 to 200 Kg and torque from 0 to 20.0 Kg m, with a least count of 0.1 Kg m.
Can both forces be read at once?
Yes. The two-channel digital force indicator, housed in the control panel, shows thrust and torque simultaneously while the hole is being drilled.
Can cutting fluid be used during tests?
Cutting fluid can be used during operation, so drilling can be carried out under the same conditions as normal machining.
Why measure drilling forces experimentally?
Empirical calculations of drilling thrust and torque can be cross-checked and verified against the measured values, which shows students how well the formulae predict real cutting loads.
Is the set-up calibrated?
The set-up is calibrated at the works, and a balancing potentiometer is fitted for initial balancing before each test.
