Digital Planimeter
Product Code : EL-MAILE-10820
Digital Planimeter (code EL-MAILE-10820) is a tabletop instrument, also known as a Plato meter, used to measure the area of irregular shapes on maps and photographs by tracing their outline. It is offered in roller-type and polar-type models with a 6-digit pulse count for cumulative measurement, accuracy within ±0.2 percent, a maximum measuring range of 325 mm vertical and 30 m horizontal, and a liquid crystal readout in metric or English scale units.

What Is the Digital Planimeter Used For?
Areas bounded by irregular outlines, such as fields, forest plots or land parcels on a map, cannot easily be found by formula, so a planimeter is traced around the boundary instead and works out the enclosed area as it moves. The user sets the required scale, guides the tracer once round the outline back to the starting point and reads the area on the display, already converted to units such as square feet or acres. Several separate parcels can be added together using the cumulative pulse count, and the hold control keeps a result on the display for recording.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of planimeters required.
- Model — the roller-type or the polar-type planimeter.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a planimeter used for?
A planimeter measures area, usually of irregular regions on a map or photograph, or of any arbitrary two-dimensional shape, by following its outline.
Which models are offered?
Two models are offered, a roller type and a polar type. Both use a 6-digit pulse count that allows cumulative measurement of several areas.
How close are the readings to the true area?
Accuracy is within ±0.2 percent, which corresponds to within ±2 pulses in every 1000 counted.
How large an area can be traced?
The maximum measuring range is 325 mm in the vertical direction and 30 m in the horizontal direction.
Can it give readings in map units?
Yes. Its computing function gives the readout in the scale desired, such as square feet or acres, in either metric or English units.
Where are planimeters commonly used?
Typical applications include civil engineering, surveying, forest management, mapmaking and agriculture, wherever large or irregular areas have to be measured from a map.
