Engineering Square

Engineering Square

Product Code : EL-MAILE-10835

Engineering Square (code EL-MAILE-10835) is a machinist's square, the metalworker's version of a try square, used to check and mark right angles on work. A steel blade is inserted and welded or pinned into a much thicker stock at exactly 90°, the square is made entirely from metal, and a notch in the stock in line with the inside edge of the blade lets it seat correctly even when the edge of the work has a burr.

What Is the Engineering Square Used For?

A square is used to check that one surface or edge is at a right angle to another and to mark lines at right angles to an edge. The user holds the stock firmly against the reference edge and slides the blade onto the work; any light visible between the blade and the surface shows that the work is out of square. The same blade serves as a straightedge for checking flatness and for laying out lines perpendicular to an edge or side, and short distances can be measured along it. The notch keeps a burr on the work edge from holding the stock away.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of squares required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an engineering square used for?
It is used to check that edges and ends are square with adjoining surfaces, to check flatness and the width or thickness of narrow pieces, to lay out perpendicular lines and to measure short distances.

How is the blade fixed to the stock?
The steel blade is inserted into a heavier body, the stock, and either welded or pinned so that the two are fixed together at exactly 90°.

Why is there a notch in the stock?
The notch lines up with the inside edge of the blade, so a burr on the edge of the work does not stop the stock seating and the check stays correct.

How does it differ from a carpenter's try square?
It is the metalworker's equivalent of a try square and is made entirely from metal, whereas a woodworker's try square commonly has a wooden stock.

How is squareness checked with it?
The stock is held against the reference edge and the blade is brought onto the work; light showing between the blade and the work reveals any error from a right angle.
