What Is the Automatic Digital Compression Testing Machine Used For?
Crushing hardened concrete cubes and cylinders gives the maximum load each will carry; divided by the loaded area, this is the compressive strength used to accept or reject a mix. Before a test the specimen is placed on the lower platen by its centring marks, short samples are raised on distance pieces and the front and rear doors are closed. The control panel takes the specimen type and size, the ram rises at rapid approach and then loads at the chosen rate up to failure, and the stress is shown beside the load-time curve. Results stay in memory or pass to a PC or printer, and a flexural frame can be connected too. The standards listed are EN 12390-4, BS 1881 and ASTM C39 (with suitable platen set).
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of compression machines required.
- Platen set — the platen set to suit the specimens, from 100 or 150 mm cubes to cylinders up to 320 mm × 160 mm.
- Extra distance pieces — additional pieces for samples shorter than 150 mm, beyond the 30, 50 and 90 mm pieces supplied.
- Ethernet and software — whether the optional Ethernet connection and the dedicated data processing package are needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the capacity and measuring class of this compression machine?
The machine has a capacity of 3000 kN and measures in Class 1 from 10% of the full range, with results shown in SI, Metric or Imperial units.
How large a specimen will the load frame take?
Cylinders up to 320 mm long and 160 mm in diameter fit the frame, as do 100 mm and 150 mm cubes. Distance pieces of 30, 50 and 90 mm come with it; samples shorter than 150 mm need extra pieces.
What happens once the start button is pressed?
With the specimen parameters already entered, the ram makes a rapid approach and then loads the specimen at the controlled rate, anywhere from 1 kN/sec to 20 kN/sec, plotting load against time until the test is complete.
What does the control unit show and keep?
Its 240 × 120 pixel graphic LCD shows a real time load vs time graph and the instantaneous load rate, and its permanent memory keeps up to 256 test results for later transfer to a PC or printer.
Which stress calculations are built into the software?
Two groups apply: the standards listed for the machine are EN 12390-4, BS 1881 and ASTM C39 with a suitable platen set, and those listed for built-in stress calculation are EN 12390-3, EN 12390-5, EN 12390-6, EN 1338, EN 1340 and EN 196.
What protects the operator and the machine during a test?
Overloading is prevented by a maximum pressure valve, and excess piston travel by a ram travel switch and the 50 mm stroke limit switch. The operator is shielded by transparent flexiglass gates front and rear, backed by an emergency stop button and a software-set load ceiling.
