What Is the Ageing Oven Used For?
An ageing test speeds up the effect of long service by holding insulation and sheath samples at a raised temperature for a set period; the samples are then tested, usually for tensile strength and elongation, and compared with unaged samples to show how much the material has deteriorated. The prepared samples are hung from the hooks under the lid inside the aluminium cylinder, the temperature is set, and air is passed through the chamber at a rate set on the rotameter. The time totalizer and hours meter record how long the samples have been held at temperature, and the bi-metallic thermostat guards against overheating.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of ovens required.
- Test temperature — the ageing temperature needed, between 140 °C and 180 °C.
Frequently Asked Questions
At what temperatures is the ageing oven used?
The oven is used at 140 °C to 180 °C, keeping the set temperature to ±1 °C with a 450 W strip type heater.
How are cable samples held?
The lid has a hook arrangement from which cable and PVC wire samples are hung inside the aluminium cylindrical pipe.
What is the rotameter for?
The rotameter on the front panel, with a control knob valve, shows and sets the flow of air passing through the chamber during the test.
How is the test duration recorded?
The digital temperature controller cum indicator has a time totalizer feature, and the control panel also carries an hours meter.
What safety device is fitted?
A bi-metallic thermostat is fitted for safety, in addition to the digital temperature controller cum indicator that runs the test.
Why are cables aged in an oven?
Holding samples at a raised temperature speeds up the slow changes that heat causes in service, so comparing their properties before and after ageing shows how the insulation will hold up.
