What Is the Soxhlet Extraction Apparatus Used For?

Soxhlet extraction removes a soluble substance, such as fat or oil, from a solid sample by washing it again and again with freshly condensed solvent. The sample sits in a thimble in the extractor above a flask of solvent; heating the flask boils the solvent, the vapour condenses above the sample and drips through it, and when the chamber fills it siphons back, carrying the extract into the flask. The operator places each flask on a mantle, clamps the glassware to the support rods and sets each heater on its energy regulator, with a toggle switch and indicator for every position.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of units required.
  • Mantles — 3 or 6 mantles.
  • Flask size — the Soxhlet flask capacity used, between 50 and 500 ml, small or large extraction size.
  • Finish — whether the double colour body is wanted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the extraction glassware included?
No. The unit supplies the heating mantles, body and support rods with clamps, while the glass parts of the extraction set are not supplied with it.

What flask sizes can be heated?
The mantles take Soxhlet flasks of 50 to 500 ml capacity, covering both small and large extraction sizes.

How many extractions can run side by side?
The body is built for either 3 or 6 mantles, and the control panel has energy regulators to match, with 6 toggle switches and 6 temperature indicators.

How hot can the mantles get?
The heating range is ambient to 300 °C, with heat from hard knitted glass yarn elements and the body insulated with mineral wool or glass wool.

How does Soxhlet extraction work?
Solvent boiled in the flask condenses above the sample, drips through it and siphons back when the chamber fills, so the sample is washed repeatedly with fresh solvent and the extract collects in the flask.
