What Is the Point Load Index Tester Used For?

The point load test gives a quick strength index for rock by squeezing a core or lump between two cone-shaped platens until it breaks; the failure load, related to the distance between the platen tips, gives the point load strength index. Because the specimen needs no cutting or capping, the test can be run at drilling sites and in the field as well as in the laboratory. The operator places the specimen between the conical loading platens, operates the hand jack and reads the failure load on the 25 kN gauge for weaker rock or the 100 kN gauge for stronger rock. The standard listed for it is IS 8764.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Point Load Index Tester measure?
It determines the Diametrical Point Load Strength Index of rock cores and irregular lumps, an index used for classifying rock materials by strength.

Do specimens need to be prepared before testing?
No. Rock cores and irregular lumps can be tested without any preparation or treatment, which allows tests at the drilling site as well as in the laboratory.

What load capacity and gauges are supplied?
The loading frame has a hand-operated hydraulic jack of 100 kN (10,000 kgf) capacity, with a 25 kN gauge reading to 0.25 kN and a 100 kN gauge reading to 0.50 kN.

Can the results be related to compressive strength?
Yes. The test results may be used to predict the uniaxial compressive strength of rock from correlations, as well as for strength classification.

How is the loading axis kept aligned?
The frame has adjustments that align the loading axis through the centre of the bearing plates and the conical loading platens at the position of the hydraulic jack ram.

Which standard is listed for the tester?
The standard listed for it is IS 8764, and the tester is supplied with the loading frame, two load gauges, conical platens and a diaphragm bolt.
