What Is the In-Situ Vane Shear Test Apparatus Used For?
The vane shear test measures the undrained shear strength of soft, saturated clays in place, where sampling would disturb the soil and lower the strength found in the laboratory. The vane on its rods is lowered to the bottom of the borehole and pushed into the clay, the torque applicator is anchored over the hole on its stand, and the crank turns the vane through the gear wheel. The split ring deforms as the clay resists, the dial gauge records the deformation, and the calibration chart converts the peak reading to torque, from which the shear strength is calculated using the vane dimensions. The dummy rods are used to allow for friction on the rods.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of in-situ vane shear sets required.
Frequently Asked Questions
What vane sizes are supplied?
Two vanes with vane rods are supplied: 37.5 mm dia. × 75 mm high and 50.0 mm dia. × 100 mm high, each with a matching dummy rod.
How is the torque measured?
A split torque ring deforms as torque is applied and a 0.002 × 5 mm dial gauge shows the deformation; the calibration chart supplied converts the readings to torque force.
Which rods come with the apparatus?
One quick coupling rod 1 m long, one 1 1/2 m long, two dummy rods for the two vanes and a 0.6 m torque rod of square cross section.
Where is the test carried out?
It is carried out at the base of a borehole in saturated cohesive ground, so the shearing resistance measured is that of the soil in place rather than of a sample.
How is the instrument held steady during testing?
A detachable stand anchors the instrument while the vane rotations are registered, and a separate attachment holds the string of rods securely.
Which standard is the in-situ vane set listed against?
The standard listed for it is IS 4434-1967, for in-situ vane shear testing of saturated cohesive soils.
