Speedy Moisture Testers (code EL-STLE-10408) are carbide reagent pressure testers used to determine the moisture content of soil, read from a pressure gauge calibrated in percentage moisture content from 0-25% × 0.25% on a wet weight basis. Each consists of a 20 g capacity pressure vessel with clamp, sealing cap and rubber gasket, an electronic balance, a carbide scoop and reagent bottle, a cleaning brush and 4 steel balls, in a polished wooden carrying case.

What Are the Speedy Moisture Testers Used For?

When moist soil is mixed with carbide reagent in a sealed vessel, the water reacts to produce a gas, and the rise in pressure depends on the amount of water present, so moisture content can be read on site within minutes instead of waiting for oven drying. The operator weighs the sample on the electronic balance, places it and a measured scoop of reagent in the vessel with the steel balls, seals the cap and shakes the vessel so the balls break up the soil. The gauge then shows moisture content as a percentage of the wet weight, which is converted to a dry weight basis for compaction control. The standards listed are ASTM D 4944 and AASHTO T 217.
