What Is the Cut Model of Automatic Transmission System Used For?

An automatic transmission changes ratio without a clutch pedal: the torque converter passes engine drive through fluid, planetary gear sets provide the ratios, and clutches and bands applied by oil pressure, directed by the control valves, hold or release parts of each gear set. With the casing cut open, the lecturer turns the hand crank on the torque converter and the class follows the drive through the gear mechanism, first in a forward speed and then in reverse, while the colour code separates the converter, gear sets and clutch packs. The model serves for lectures on automatic shifting and for identifying each assembly before workshop servicing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the model made from?
It is made from a full-size original used automatic transmission of a car, sectioned to show the internal details of the gear mechanism for the forward and reverse speeds.

How many speeds does the gear change provide?
The epicycloid gear change gives 5 forward speeds plus reverse, using multiple-plate clutches and control valves alongside the hydraulic torque converter.

How is the mechanism moved during a lesson?
It is operated manually: a hand crank is applied on the torque converter, turning the mechanism so the gear train can be followed through the cut casing.

How are the different parts told apart?
Each component and sectioned area is painted to a colour code, many parts are chromium plated and galvanised, and the hardware and gears are electroplated.

What are the size and weight of the model?
It stands on a tubular frame with wheels, measuring about 750 × 550 × 700 mm and weighing approximately 110 kg.
