Static and Dynamic Balancing Apparatus
Product Code : EL-DOMLE-10778
Static and Dynamic Balancing Apparatus (code EL-DOMLE-10778) is an experimental unit that demonstrates rotor imbalance and how it is corrected, making clear how static imbalance differs from dynamic imbalance. Four imbalance masses, with a total imbalance of 880 cmg, can be fixed at any angle and position along a ball-bearing shaft driven by a variable-speed motor and belt at up to 1400 min-1, with the speed shown digitally.

What Is the Static and Dynamic Balancing Apparatus Used For?
A rotor is statically unbalanced when its centre of mass lies off the axis, so it settles with the heavy side down, and dynamically unbalanced when masses in different planes produce a rocking couple that shows only when it spins. Students fix the four masses at chosen angles and positions, find their moments by comparing them with the external moment from the weights on the additional pulley, and then arrange the masses so that the shaft stays put in any position at rest and runs without imbalance vibration when driven. Running the shaft at different speeds shows the imbalance vibrations before and after balancing.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of balancing apparatus required.
- Power supply — 230 V 50 Hz, 230 V 60 Hz or 120 V 60 Hz single phase.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between static and dynamic imbalance?
Static imbalance means the centre of mass is off the shaft axis, which shows even at rest; dynamic imbalance comes from masses in different planes forming a couple, which shows only when the rotor spins.
How many imbalance masses are supplied?
Four variable imbalance masses are supplied, together giving a total imbalance of 880 cmg, and each can be attached at any angular and longitudinal position on the shaft.
How is the imbalance measured?
A defined external moment is applied through an additional pulley with weights and compared with the moment of the imbalance masses, so the imbalance can be determined and then balanced.
What speed does the shaft reach?
A variable-speed electric motor and belt drive the shaft from 0 to 1400 min-1, and the speed is shown on a digital display.
How are students protected from the rotating shaft?
A transparent cover prevents contact with the rotating parts while still giving a clear view of the shaft, and an elastic foundation bearing suppresses unwanted vibration.
