Computerized Boiling Heat Transfer Apparatus
Product Code : EL-HAMTLE-10753
Computerized Boiling Heat Transfer Apparatus (code EL-HAMTLE-10753) is an experimental unit that demonstrates evaporation in a steam boiler fire tube, using an internally heated cylinder inside a transparent process tank so that nucleate and film boiling can be watched and the heat transfer coefficient calculated. It has a 10 L tank with a safety valve opening at 2.2 bar, a 250 W continuously adjustable heater, an 80 mm copper cooling coil and USB data acquisition to a PC.

What Is the Computerized Boiling Heat Transfer Apparatus Used For?
When a heated surface boils a liquid, bubbles first form at individual points on the surface, which is nucleate boiling and carries heat away well; at higher heat flux a layer of vapour can cover the surface, which is film boiling and insulates it. Students set the heater power, watch the cylinder through the transparent tank and log pressure, flow rate and temperature, while the water-cooled condenser turns the vapour back to liquid so boiling continues. From the heater power, its 0.001875 m² surface and the measured temperatures, the PC software works out the heat transfer coefficient, showing how temperature and pressure change evaporation in a boiler fire tube.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of boiling heat transfer units required.
- Power supply — 230 V, 50/60 Hz single phase, or 120 V, 60 Hz single phase.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the boiling heat transfer unit demonstrate?
It demonstrates evaporation in a steam boiler fire tube, modelled by a cylinder heated from inside, and shows the effect of temperature and pressure on the evaporation process.
Can students see the different forms of boiling?
Yes. The process tank is transparent, so nucleate boiling and film boiling at the heated cylinder can be observed directly while measurements are taken.
What is the difference between nucleate and film boiling?
In nucleate boiling, vapour bubbles form at points on the heated surface and carry heat away well. In film boiling, a layer of vapour covers the surface and insulates it, so heat transfer falls.
Why is a low-boiling liquid used?
A liquid that evaporates at low temperatures can be boiled at moderate temperatures in the closed tank, and the water-cooled condenser turns the vapour back into liquid so the boiling process is continuous.
What are the measuring ranges?
Pressure is measured from 0 to 4 bar absolute, flow rate from 0.05 to 1.8 L/min and temperature by thermocouple from 0 to 200 °C.
What services does the unit need?
It needs a 230 V, 50/60 Hz or 120 V, 60 Hz single-phase supply together with a water supply and drain, and it occupies approx. 900 × 450 × 820 mm.
