What Are the Metallurgical Samples Used For?

A reference set lets students see what each heat treatment, alloy and process looks like under the metallurgical microscope without preparing every specimen themselves. Each mounted specimen is placed on the microscope stage and its structure compared with the photograph and description in the booklet: for example, the change from annealed to normalized to hardened and tempered steel, flake graphite in gray cast iron against nodules in ductile iron, or the hard case of a carburized part. The set is also used to check that students' own prepared and etched specimens show the expected structure.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of specimen sets required.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many specimens are in the set?
The set has 23 ready, Bakelite-mounted specimens covering steels, cast irons, brass, bronze, aluminium and welded, plated and powder metallurgy components.

What information comes with the specimens?
A booklet gives each specimen's chemical composition, mechanical treatment, heat treatment details and type of etchant, with a description of the microstructure and coloured photographs.

Which cast irons are included?
The list includes mottled, ductile, gray and white cast iron, which together show the main forms that carbon takes in cast iron.

How is the set stored?
The specimens are supplied in a wooden storing box with silica gel, measuring 350 × 350 × 100 mm, and the complete set weighs 5 kg.

Do the specimens need preparing before use?
No. They are ready specimens, already mounted in Bakelite and prepared for microscopic observation, so they can go straight onto the microscope stage.

What should an export enquiry include?
An export enquiry should list the number of sets, the destination country with its port or city, the delivery terms wanted (for example FOB or CIF), packing needs and any tender reference.
