What Is the Matalography Hand Grinder Used For?
Grinding is the stage that removes saw marks and brings a specimen face to a flat surface ready for polishing, and it is done in steps, each on a finer abrasive than the last. The operator holds the sample by hand and draws it along the 240 grit strip, then moves to the 360, 600, 800 and 1200 grit stations in turn, turning the sample between stages while water rinses away the debris. When a strip wears, fresh paper is pulled from the roll. After grinding the sample is polished, and it may be etched so that its microstructure shows under the microscope.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which grits does the hand grinder use?
It has five grinding stations with 240, 360, 600, 800 and 1200 grit silicon carbide rolls, covering P240 to P1200 from coarse to fine.
What size are the abrasive rolls?
Each roll is 3-7/16 in wide and 60 ft long on a 1 in core, and spring type fixturing lets fresh paper be drawn from the roll.
Can it be used wet?
Yes. It offers both wet and dry grinding, and its cooling rinse system uses water to cool the sample and wash the strips.
Why use a hand grinder rather than a rotating machine?
Small samples can be prepared and kept flat much more easily by hand on a fixed strip than on a rotating system.
What is the machine made of?
It is built from stainless steel with a cast aluminium base, with hard coat anodized rollers and paper support plates; it measures 565 × 535 × 200 mm and weighs 25 kg.
Which applications is it suited to?
It is used for heat treatment control, weld analysis and microstructural evaluation, working with a range of material types.
