Galvanometer

Galvanometer

Product Code : EL-MAILE-10857

Galvanometer (code EL-MAILE-10857) is an electromechanical instrument used to detect and indicate electric current, its pointer deflecting in response to current through a coil in a constant magnetic field. This model is a moving coil galvanometer with 100 µA sensitivity and a centre-zero range of 30 – 0 – 30.

What Is the Galvanometer Used For?

In school and college electricity practicals the galvanometer shows whether a small current is flowing and in which direction. With its zero at the centre of the 30 – 0 – 30 scale, the pointer swings left or right according to the direction of the current, which makes it suited to finding the null point in Wheatstone bridge, meter bridge and potentiometer experiments, to showing the current induced when a magnet moves in a coil, and to conversion experiments in which a shunt or series resistor turns it into an ammeter or voltmeter.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of galvanometers required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of galvanometer is this?
It is a moving coil galvanometer, the main type of galvanometer mechanism still in use, with a sensitivity of 100 µA.

What does the 30 – 0 – 30 range mean?
The scale reads from 30 on one side through 0 at the centre to 30 on the other, so the pointer shows both the size and the direction of a current.

How does a galvanometer work?
Current flowing through a coil placed in a constant magnetic field turns the coil, producing a rotary deflection of the pointer that indicates the current.

Which experiments use a centre-zero galvanometer?
It is used to find the balance point in Wheatstone bridge, meter bridge and potentiometer experiments, and to show the current induced when a magnet is moved in a coil.
