Submerged Arc Welding-SAW Machines

Submerged Arc Welding-SAW Machines

Product Code : EL-WTMAA-10602

Submerged Arc Welding-SAW Machines (code EL-WTMAA-10602) are welding systems for submerged arc welding, made up of a power source, a wire feeder and control system, a torch or gun, a flux hopper and feeding mechanism and, for automatic work, a travel mechanism. The power source is rated for a 100 percent duty cycle because submerged arc welding runs continuously.

What Are the Submerged Arc Welding-SAW Machines Used For?

In submerged arc welding the arc burns beneath a blanket of granular flux fed from the hopper, so it is hidden from view and the molten weld is shielded from the air. The wire feeder drives the electrode wire continuously into the joint while the travel mechanism moves the torch, or the welder guides the gun by hand in semiautomatic work, and unused flux can be gathered by the recovery system for reuse. Because a single weld may run for more than 10 minutes, the power source must carry its rated current at a 100 percent duty cycle.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of SAW machines required.
  • Welding mode — automatic, with welding torch and travel mechanism, or semiautomatic, with welding gun and cable assembly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a SAW machine consist of?
It consists of a welding machine or power source, a wire feeder and control system, a torch for automatic or a gun and cable assembly for semiautomatic welding, a flux hopper and feeding mechanism, usually a flux recovery system, and a travel mechanism for automatic welding.

Why must the power source be rated for a 100 percent duty cycle?
Submerged arc welding operations are continuous and a single weld may take more than 10 minutes, so the power source must deliver its current without the rest periods a lower duty cycle needs.

Can a 60 percent duty cycle power source be used?
Yes, but it must be derated according to the duty cycle curve for 100 percent operation, so that it is not overloaded during continuous welding.

What wire feeder is needed with constant current?
When a constant current power source is used, either AC or DC, the voltage sensing electrode wire feeder system must be used.
