What Are the Buchner Funnels, Polypropylene Used For?

A Buchner funnel separates a solid from a liquid by drawing the liquid through a filter under reduced pressure, which is quicker than filtering by gravity alone. Filter paper is laid on the perforated plate in the top portion, the two portions are fitted together so that a vacuum can be formed, and the mixture is poured in; the liquid is pulled through the plate while the solid stays behind on the paper. As the polypropylene funnels can be autoclaved, they can also be sterilised between uses.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Buchner Funnels, Polypropylene made of?
Each funnel is made of polypropylene and supplied in white. The funnels are lightweight and can go through an autoclave for sterilisation.

How does the funnel form a vacuum?
The funnel is made in two portions. The top portion fits onto the lower one to form a vacuum, and the liquid is drawn down through the perforated filter plate at its base.

Where is the filter plate located?
A perforated filter plate sits at the base of the top portion, so the material being filtered rests on the plate while the liquid passes through it.

Can the funnels be sterilised?
Yes. The polypropylene funnels are autoclavable, so they can be sterilised in an autoclave between filtrations whenever the work calls for it.
