What Is the Pasteur Pipette Used For?
Pasteur pipettes are used to move small amounts of liquid drop by drop, for example adding a reagent to a test tube, transferring a supernatant or loading a sample, where an exact volume is not required. Suction applied at the top end draws liquid into the narrow glass tip, and releasing it lets the liquid run out where it is wanted. As these pipettes are non-sterile, they are used for general and routine work rather than aseptic culture handling, and because they are disposable, taking a new pipette each time avoids carry-over between samples.
