What Is the Squibb Separating Funnel Used For?
Liquids that do not mix, such as an aqueous solution and an organic solvent, settle into two layers, and a separating funnel lets them be parted. The mixture is poured in, the PE stopper is fitted and the funnel is shaken and vented, then supported upright while the layers settle. Opening the solid glass stopcock lets the lower layer run out into a receiving vessel, and the stopcock is closed as the boundary between the layers reaches it. The squibb shape, a tapered pear-like body, narrows towards the stopcock, where the boundary can be watched as it falls.
