What Is the Inoculation Spreader Used For?
Spread plating distributes a small volume of liquid culture across the whole surface of an agar plate, so that separate colonies form and can be counted or picked. The user places the suspension on the medium and moves the crossbar of the T-shaped spreader back and forth while turning the plate until the liquid is taken up. A reusable glass or metal spreader is normally dipped in alcohol and flamed between plates; this gamma sterile spreader is used as supplied, which avoids the flame and the aerosols that flaming can raise.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of inoculation spreaders required.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Inoculation Spreader used for?
It is recommended for spreading bacterial suspensions evenly across culture media, so that the inoculum covers the surface of the plate uniformly.
Does the spreader need flaming before use?
No. It is supplied gamma sterile, so heat sterilisation or flaming is not needed, which also avoids the aerosols that flaming can disperse.
What shape and colour is it?
The spreader is T-shaped and made from blue polystyrene, with the crossbar of the T used to spread the suspension over the medium.
How does it help reduce cross-contamination?
Each spreader is gamma sterile when used, which reduces the risk of cross-contamination between cultures, and it also helps prevent pathogenic aerosols spreading in the work area.
