What Is the Gas Jar with Cover Used For?
Gas jars hold samples of gases prepared in school and college chemistry, such as oxygen, hydrogen or carbon dioxide, so that their properties can be examined. Gas from the experiment is led into the jar, commonly by displacing water from the jar while it is held upside down, or by displacing air, depending on the density of the gas. When the jar is full, the frosted ground glass cover is slid across the ground flange to close it, keeping the gas in while the jar is moved or tested. As a soda-lime glass jar, it is kept away from direct heat.
