Automatic Digital Bitumen Penetrometer
Product Code : EL-BTLE-10442
Automatic Digital Bitumen Penetrometer (code EL-BTLE-10442) is an electronic penetrometer that determines the needle penetration of bitumen with a pulse type measuring system kept separate from the plunger, so the plunger runs free with virtually no friction. It measures 0-50 mm at 0.01 mm resolution under a 100 g test load (97.5 g plunger plus 2.5 g needle), with a 5 second test time adjustable from 0.1 to 9999 sec, and draws 75 W.

What Is the Automatic Digital Bitumen Penetrometer Used For?
In a penetration test the depth reached by a standard needle tells the laboratory how hard the bitumen is, and on a manual instrument the release, timing and reading all rest with the operator. Here the sample cup is brought from the water bath in the transfer dish, the needle is driven down and set on the surface with the joystick, using the magnifier and LED lamp, and the test is started; the plunger drops for the set time, normally 5 seconds, then lifts, and the depth appears on the display. Because the plunger can be removed and weighed, the 100 g load can be confirmed. For this automatic instrument the standards listed are EN 1426, ASTM D5 and AASHTO T49.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of penetrometers required.
- Water bath and thermometer — the water bath and the IP38, ASTM 17C or 63C thermometer, which are ordered separately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the measuring system kept apart from the plunger?
Separating the pulse type electronic measuring system from the plunger during the test lets the plunger move freely, which virtually eliminates friction from the penetration reading.
What load and timing does the Automatic Digital Bitumen Penetrometer use?
The test load is 100 g, made up of the 97.5 g plunger and the 2.5 g needle, and the test time is 5 seconds, adjustable from 0.1 to 9999 sec.
How is the needle positioned on the sample?
An electric drive lowers the needle to the sample and a joystick on the front panel gives the final fine adjustment, helped by the supplied magnifying glass and ultra-bright LED lamp.
What range and resolution are available?
Penetration can be measured across 0-50 mm, resolved to 0.01 mm, and the measuring system resets itself automatically before each test starts.
What has to be ordered separately?
A water bath and a thermometer (IP38, ASTM 17C or 63C) are needed for the test and are ordered separately; the needle, transfer dish and 6 stainless steel sample cups are included.
How big and heavy is the penetrometer?
The penetrometer measures 270 × 480 × 750 mm, weighs approximately 24 kg, with a 75 W power rating.
