Rolling Thin Film Oven
Product Code : EL-BTLE-10435
Rolling Thin Film Oven (code EL-BTLE-10435) is a laboratory oven that exposes a moving film of semi-solid asphalt binder to heat and air, reproducing the ageing a hot mix binder goes through while the mix is made and laid. It holds 8 specimens rotating at 15R ±0.2R/min, heats from ambient to 200 °C under PID control with an 85 minute timing alarm, and has double-walled construction with 75 mm fibreglass insulation.

What Is the Rolling Thin Film Oven Used For?
Performance-graded binder specifications need a laboratory step that reproduces the hardening a binder suffers in the mixing plant and during laying, and the RTFO test provides it. Binder poured into the specimen containers is placed in the rotating carriage, where turning at 15R ±0.2R/min keeps it spread as a thin moving film while heated air is blown in; after the 85 minute cycle the residue is weighed, and its viscosity and other properties are measured against those of the unaged binder. Repeatability depends directly on how closely the oven holds its temperature and how reproducible its thermal rise time is. The standards listed are EN 12607-1, ASTM D2872 and AASHTO T240.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of ovens required.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Rolling Thin Film Oven simulate?
It reproduces the ageing that hot mix asphalt binder undergoes during manufacturing and laying, by exposing a moving film of semi-solid binder to heat and air; binder properties are measured before and after.
How many specimens does one run hold, and how fast do they turn?
Eight specimens are held per run and rotate at 15R ±0.2R/min, and the timing device sounds an alarm at 85 min to mark the end of the cycle.
What temperature range and control does it offer?
The oven heats from ambient up to 200 °C under a PID controller with 0.5 °C control accuracy, shows the measured temperature on 4 digit red LEDs, and has thermal protection against overheating.
How is the air supply to the specimens regulated?
Air flow is set with a long taper needle valve and read on an air pressure gauge of 0-60 PSI, and a heat exchanger made of 5/16 inch dia. copper tube is fitted.
What are the size, weight and power rating?
The oven measures H 381 mm × W 483 mm × D 445 mm ± 13 mm, weighs an estimated 100 kg and has a power rating of 2.6 kW on a 50 Hz single phase supply.
What should an overseas buyer include in an enquiry?
An overseas enquiry should give the number of ovens, the destination country and port or city, the delivery terms required such as FOB or CIF, any special packing needs and the tender reference, if there is one.
