Ductility Testing Apparatus

Ductility Testing Apparatus

Product Code : EL-BTLE-10422

Ductility Testing Apparatus (code EL-BTLE-10422) is a motor-driven water-bath machine used to stretch bitumen ductility specimens, three of them at the same time. A carriage driven along a lead screw through a reduction gear unit gives two rates of travel, 50 mm/min and 10 mm/min, inside a stainless steel lined bath encased in metal bound hardwood, with an electric pump circulator and thermostatically controlled heater on a 230 V, 50 Hz supply.

What Is the Ductility Testing Apparatus Used For?

Ductility shows how far a bitumen can be drawn out into a thread before it breaks, which indicates how well a binder can deform without cracking in a pavement. Molten bitumen is poured into the moulds on their base plates, trimmed and conditioned, and the moulds are then fixed between the carriage and the end of the bath under water that the heater and circulator hold at the test temperature, checked with the thermometer supplied. The motor pulls the three specimens apart at the chosen rate, and the elongation at which each thread breaks is recorded as its ductility. The standards listed are IS 1208-1058, ASTM D 113, IP32, 55 and AASHTO T 51.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many specimens can be tested at once?
The machine is built to test three specimens simultaneously, and 3 ductility moulds, each with its base plate, are supplied for preparing them.

What travel speeds are available?
The carriage can travel at 50 mm/min or 10 mm/min. An electric motor turns the lead screw through a reduction gear unit, moving the carriage at a constant speed.

How is the bath temperature held?
An electric pump circulator moves the water while a heater with thermostatic control keeps it at the set temperature, and an IP 38C thermometer covering 23 °C to 27 °C is included for checking it.

How is the water bath constructed?
The bath is lined with stainless steel and completely encased in metal bound hardwood, and the whole drive and specimen assembly is mounted within it.

What does a ductility result tell the engineer?
It is the distance a standard bitumen specimen stretches before its thread breaks, used as one measure of how far a binder can deform without fracturing.

What power supply does it run on?
A 230 V, 50 Hz single phase mains supply feeds the drive motor, the pump circulator and the heater of the bath.
